SR Bulleid "LEAD" Class 0-6-6-0T

Date Number (at time) Depot (at time) Code Details Ref Link
Thu 02/06/1949 36001 ??   Initial trial trip. Engine failed to reverse properly after running from the Works to Brighton Central Station.
Returned to Works for examination.
It was found to have broken a valve rod to the middle sleeve of No.1 bogie and bent the oscillating gear lever of the same bogie.
Mr Bulleid decided that a slightly greater clearance than that shown on drawing should be given to this sleeve valve, and the oscillating levers of both bogies were modified by adding stiffening strips.

Sat 25/06/1949 36001 ??   Engine ran light to Falmer and return (morning), and to Groombridge and return during afternoon. 69 miles.

Wed 29/06/1949 36001 ??   Eastleigh to Brighton as light engine.
A considerable amount of "knocking" was heard from No.1 bogie during the latter part of the trip.
Upon examination it was found that valve rods driving the middle and left hand sleeves had broken. The middle sleeve valve was fractured in four places, and the left hand valve had seizure marks on both sides of its exterior.
All sleeves of this bogie were reduced in diameter on Mr Bulleid's orders, broken valve rods replaced, and all other motion set and straightened where required. 65 miles.

Sun 24/07/1949 36001 ??   Trial runs to Seaford and return (twice).
Just before reaching Seaford on second trip the valve gear of No.1 bogie developed trouble and a slow return to Brighton was made with this bogie fixed in mid-gear.
At the time of the occurence the engine was being run in full gear (about 75%) at a rather higher speed than usual.
Examination showed that the right hand valve rod was broken, and the sleeve valve had fractured. The combination lever had bent, and quadrant link opened up.
A new R.H. sleeve valve was fitted, and other motion details attended to. Both sides and part of firebox relined. 68 miles.
