NER/LNER McDonnell "J22" Class 0-6-0

Class Types
LNER Class J22
NER Class 59

General
Designer Mr Alexander McDonnell
Introduced 1883
Pre-Grouping Company North Eastern Railway
Grouping Company London and North Eastern Railway
Description (1957) Heavier than the Fletcher 398 class, the 59's (LNER J22) were designed for fast freight in the NER region and, as such, were fitted with Westinghouse brakes. They were particularly associated with the Yorkshire coast lines where they were one of the few freight locomotives allowed on the Malton - Whitby line.
They were not an improvement on the 398 class and both classes were soon superceded. They were often used on excursions and all were fitted with steam heating apparatus later on.
In their later years the class were relegated to station pilot and shunting duties, with several allocated to Carlisle London Road for banking on the Newcastle line.
