29/08/1955 First Gresley J6 condemned No. 64242, withdrawn on 29/8 is the first of the Gresley J6 class to be taken out of service. It had been recently shedded at Hornsey. Built in 1914 (Doncaster No. 1453) as No. 593, it was renumbered 4242 in Oct. 1946 and 64242 in May 1948. There were 110 engines in the class, cyls. 19' x 26', wheels 5' 2', superheated, with piston valves. SLS/195510
