The last of the Hull & Barnsley locomotives |
The withdrawal of 0-6-2T No. 69114 on 22/10/1956, is of more than ordinary interest, for not only was L.N.E.R. Class N13 thereby rendered extinct, but the engine was the last survivor of the old Hull & Barnsley stock of 186 locomotives (built 1885-1915). On the H. & B. line they were known as Class F3, and as usual with Stirling engines, had domeless boilers. After becoming N.E. property in 1922, domed boilers were provided as the engines went through the shops. They were built by Hawthorn, Leslie & Co. in 1913/14, makers nos. 3008-3017, with 18' x 26' cylinders, 4' 6' coupled wheels, and the weight in working order 61 tons 9 cwts. Particulars of their numbers, etc., are appended:-

All ten became B.R. stock, only one not receiving its new number (69110). In recent years the class was divided between Springhead and Neville Hill, No. 69114 finishing its duties at the latter depot. |
