Brighton Excursion |
On 13th August 1950, a through excursion was run to Brighton from Enfield Town and Chingford, the two parts being combined at Lea Bridge. The train consisted of eight coaches of E.R. main line stock and was hauled both ways between New Cross Gate and Brighton by L.1 No. 31753. On the return journey two J.67 0-6-0 tanks took the train to Liverpool St. via the East London line, where a B.1 came on the rear to complete the journey to Enfield Town via Lea Bridge-where the Chingford portion was handed over to an N.7 0-6-2 tank. This made a total of five locomotives used on this train for the return journey only. The passage through the Thames Tunnel was an interesting experience. The two small 0-6-0 tanks seemed to have no difficulty in lifting the train up the severe climb between Wapping and Shadwell. Patronage of the train was about 200. It is understood that a similar excursion was run on a July Sunday from Enfield Town and Chingford to Margate via the E. London line and New Cross Gate. Also, on 20th August, an excursion to Eastbourne was run from Hatfield and stations to Finsbury Park, with reversal at Canonbury, whence a U.1 took the train to destination via Camden Town, Willesden (H.L.) and Clapham Jc. A similar train was run to Brighton on a Sunday in August 1949 when U.1 No. 31908 officiated from Canonbury hauling 11 well-filled ex-L.N.E.R. corridor coaches; to that point an E.R. 0-6-2T had been in charge of the train. |

There are still a number of boilers so fitted which are inter-changed from time to time, though the second dome has served no purpose since the top-feed arrangement with which it was associated by the L. B.& S.C.R. was discontinued in 1930 under Southern auspices. The ranks of the famous 'I.3' tanks are being rapidly depleted since the advent of the new Class 4 MT Tanks. |
