08/09/1956 N.C.B. and Industrial Locomotives Notes The following locomotives have recently been scrapped at Seaton Delaval (Hartley Main Colliery). Kerr Stuart 0-4-0ST Works No. 4011 of 1919. 'Skiddaw Lodge' 0-6-0ST Hudswell Clarke Works No. 1400 of 1920, rebuilt by Ridley Shaw, Middlesbrough, in 1949. No. 29 built Beyer Peacock Gorton 1899, rebuilt Ridley Shaw, Middlesbrough, 1949. (scrapped w/e 16.9.56). Nos. 3 and 27 are standing outside the shed dead and apparently awaiting cutting up. No. 2 (Netherton Unit) 0-6-0ST Peckett & Sons Works No. 1094 of 1906, is standing alongside the shed and is reported to be awaiting repair. No. 7 (Hartley Main) R. & W. Hawthorn Leslie Works No. 2835 of 1910, is undergoing repair and has been fitted with a new boiler. Whitburn Colliery. On the occasion of the visit to the locomotive depot on the 10th July, the following locomotives were seen: 'Laleham,' Andrew Barclay 0-6-0ST Works No. 1639 built 1923; Robert Stephenson & Hawthorn 0-6-0ST Works No. 7338 built 1948; Robert Stephenson & Hawthorn 0-6-0ST Works No. 7603 built 1949; Robert Stephenson & Hawthorn 0-6-0ST Works No. 7695 built 1951; Robert Stephenson & Hawthorn 0-6-0ST Works No. 7749 built 1952; Hunslet Engine Co., Leeds 0-6-0ST. Works No. 3191 built 1944;
5626 ex N.E.R. 0-6-0 L.N.E.R. class J24 built Gateshead 1897 (L.N.E.R. No. 1931). This engine was in the course of being cut up. It had been stored for a few years at Bolden Colliery and was taken over to Whitburn Colliery about three months prior to our visit.
After visiting the steam depot, the electric locomotive depot at Westoe Lane, South Shields, was visited and the following locomotives were seen : E1 4-wheeler Siemens built 1907; E2 4-wheeler Siemens built 1908; E3 Bo-Bo Siemens built 1909; E4 Bo-Bo Siemens built 1909; E5 two 4-wheeler Siemens in tandem built 1909; E6 two 4-wheeler Siemens in tandem built 1909; E7 Bo-Bo Kerr Stuart Works No. 1202 built 1911; E8 Bo-Bo Kerr Stuart Works No. 1203 built 1911; E9 Bo-Bo A.E.G. Works No. 1565 built 1913; E10 4-wheeler Siemens Works No. 852 built 1913; E11 Bo-Bo English Electric Co. Works No. 1795 built 1951; E12 Bo-Bo English Electric Co. Works No. 1794 built 1951;
Nos. E5 and E6 have side rods to each set of wheels. Nos. E7 and E8 are both constructed in two halves, and the other similar locos. have bogies mounted on a rigid frame. Only Nos. E9, Ell and E12 are fitted with air brakes.
