Description (1957) |
Churchward 4-cylinder 4-6-0's 6' 8½" wheels, built between 1906 and 1923. A class of originally 73 locomotives numbered 4000-4072. No. 4000 was initially constructed as an 'Atlantic' and converted later to a 4-6-0. Successive batches were named after `Stars', 'Knights', 'Kings' (later renamed 'Monarchs'), 'Queens', `Princes', 'Princesses', and 'Abbeys', but the whole class was generally known under the generic name of 'Stars'. Nos. 4000, 4009, 4016, 4032, 4037 and 4063-4072 were later rebuilt as 'Castles'. Withdrawal of the remainder commenced in 1932 and the last survivor in traffic was No. 4056, withdrawn in October 1957. |
