Historical Data Fairburn developed Stanier's 2 cylinder 2-6-4T design by reducing the coupled wheelbase, thereby enabling the engines to negotiate curves of radius 5 chains instead of the 6 chains of the original. Furthermore, the weight was reduced by 2t 12cwt. Altogether, these changes allowed the Fairburn design to have an increased sphere of activity.
Other principle changes involved the footplating which was shallower and cut away at the front to ease access to the cylinders and pistons.
