Description (1957) |
Class B12. Holden Great Eastern 4-6-0's, original-ly built 1911-20 with 6'6" wheels. Many were rebuilt to class B12/3. Most of the unconverted engines were transferred to the Great North of Scotland section from 1931 onwards, where they remained for the rest of their existence, the last of them being withdrawn in November 1954. The last ten engines, Nos. 61571-61580, were built new in 1928 with Gresley round-topped boilers, raised running plates over the wheels and valve modifications. Subsequently 44 of the earlier engines were similarly rebuilt and many of these conversions are still running in 1957. |
