Description (1957) |
Class D49/1. Gresley 3-cylinder 6'8" 4-4-0 passenger engines with Walschaert's valve gear. Named after counties and known as the 'Shire' class.
Class D49/2, a variation of the 'Shire' class above, with Lentz poppet valves. Familiarly known as the 'Hunt' class.
Class D49/4. Formerly class D49/2, but rebuilt in 1942 with two inside cylinders. No other engines of the class were so treated, the solitary example being withdrawn from service in 1952. |
