07/05/1960 The J21 Rail Tour in the North - East The first rail tour to be organised in the North-East was held on Saturday, 7th May, 1960. A private venture by Mr. Geoffrey Jackson of Darlington, the three-coach train was filled to capacity in spite of the comparatively short time that was available after B.R. had given their approval. No. 65033, one of the last four surviving J.21s and normally shedded at Blaydon, was specially repainted at Darlington works for the trip. The outward journey from Darlington to Carlisle was via Bishop Auckland, Stainmore Summit and Tebay, where the train reversed. The coal available at Darlington was all rather small, and this led to the locomotive's smoke box becoming filled with ash, so that two stops for a blow-up had to be made. The first stop was just before Stainmore and the second, immediately after crossing Smardale Viaduct. However, after the locomotive had been turned at Tebay, the proffered services of an L.M.S. Class 4 tank as banker over Shap were scorned, and the summit was successfully reached after a steady 20-25 miles per hour up the 1 in 75. Although the arrival at Carlisle was just over lover an hour late, buses were laid on to take those who were interested to Kingmoor and Upperby sheds. At the latter, No. 65033 was prepared for the return journey and a supply of large coal taken on. This was much more to the locomotive's liking and after a good climb to Eden Valley junction, a maximum speed of 60 miles per hour was reached at one point before Appleby. At Kirkby Stephen it was discovered that a freight train had heen sent off about five minutes before the special arrived, and a long wait ensued while this cleared the 9/ miles section to the summit. Owing to the condition of the water in the boiler, No. 65033 tended to prime, and on the final climb to Stainmore, a short stop had to be made at Barras to refill the boiler, although steam pressure was being adequately maintained. Even so, the freight was 'overhauled again before Bowes. From Barnard Castle, the return journey was via West Auckland and the direct spur to Shildon, which lost its passenger service in 1863, and the final few miles into Darlington were over the original Stockton and Darlington line.
