30/06/1949 G.N. of S. Section On the G.N. of S. nearly all the 4-4-0's have been repainted, and most of them fully lined out, including the backs of the tenders. They are kept in beautifully snick and span condition, particularly those at Kittybrewster, a visit to which shed revealed not a single dirty locomotive in the place, surely unique in these days. The ex G.E.R. 'B.12' 4-6-0's look particularly fine, nearly all being in L.N.E.R. green, including the wheels, but they are now beginning to appear painted black and fully lined. The G.N. of S. Section must nowadays boast the smartest and best-kept locomotives to be found anywhere on British Railways. An ex L.M.S. 2-6-4T, No. 42689, has been working from Kittybrewster to Keith and Elgin, and has also been tried on some of the branches. It has proved very popular, in contrast to the Class '2' 4-4-0's which are not liked, owing to their driving wheels being too large in diameter for the 'Great North' road. Main line traffic is, of course, handled by 'B.1's,' the 'B.12's' work principally to Balloter and Peterhead, and on fish trains, whilst the ex G.N. of S. 4-4-0's continue to put up lively performances on the branches. The St. Combs branch locomotives are ex G.E.R. 2-4-2T's Nos. 7151 an 7164, both fitted with cowcatchers. The last mentioned still retains 'L.N.E.R. 7164' on the tank sides but carries a smokebox numberplate-7164. SLS/194908
