The company's roots were in Nasmyth Gaskell, with Holbrook Gaskell providing financial backing. In 1850 the company became 'James Nasmyth & Co.' and in 1857 the 'Patricroft Iron Works'. In 1867 the company became 'Nasmyth Wilson & Co.' when Robert Wilson joined the company and the company became Limited in 1882.
India was the principal market for the company and many of the 1,188 exported locomotives were for orders from the sub-continent. |
