Description (1957) Class Y9. North British 3'8" 0-4-0ST's, originally a class of 38 engines built 1882-99. Thirty-three were still running in 1948 and of these 14 were withdrawn between 1953 and 1955.

Historical Data The first two engines were Neilson standard design 0-4-0ST. They proved to be ideal for dock work due to their short wheelbase, resulting in 6 batches of 6 engines being built at the NBR's own works at Cowlairs. They also found work in small industrial yards throughout the NBR system at places such as Dundee.
They were reboilered from 1913 onwards and from 1920 onwards, a number of engines were fitted with a steam brake, replacing the hand brake they were built with.
